From EGL to Pikachu Princess

Deciding on the costume right for you is sometimes the most difficult thing to do. Based on hair and skin tones, or all over appeal, you can transform yourself into the perfect...whatever!

Wigs

If you don't want to wear a wig, try to find a way to dye or contort your hair into odd positions naturally. Since anime hair is very...anime, this can be difficult. Do not wholly base your decisions off this. Rikku from FFX-2 turns many people off, by hair alone. Remember... wigs are itchy-scratchy, but extensions are a possibility.

Props

I SO HEART PROPS! Who doesn't? What would Seras Victoria be with out her huge gun? Though one look at that bad boy, and in addition to the parents ushering their kids away from you, you have a huge prop to lug around. Though props sometimes make the costume, you've got to consider exactly how much you want to run around with a 130 pound, six foot buster sword. Yes, some people possess the dedication (and muscle) to do this. But if you're not interested in making a vital prop, you could be in for a bit of "Nice costume...who are you?"

Appendages

You want to be Doc Ock? Newsflash: the accurate props from the movie weight 30 pounds. Do the math.

30 lbs+steel+fangirls with yaoi paddles= x.X

If you're a fairy, you need to worry about people crunching your wings. Or you poking someone's eye out. Erlack a pongoes. It will stain, you know.

Seriously, if it's not safe to have in crowds, please a) don't go to my con or b) don't do the costume.

Difficulty

I would not recommend starting out with the Master Chief for your first cosplay. My first was Freya from Chobits, and I learned real fast what a bad idea that was. It ended up okay, but you could tell I was a n00b. My brother start out with Ness from Earthbound, and as simple as the costume was, we couldn't pry the fan girls off with Pocky and chocolate.

A costume may appear difficult, but sit down and take a hard look at it. Search it on showcases, read construction notes, and dream. Creativity plays a huge part in cosplay.
